Why Our Momentum Reversal Method Works

After a few years of testing with both ETF’s and then individual stocks, we rolled out our MRM (momentum reversal method) platform at my ATP subscription service in November 2011.  This is now beginning to get alot of attention in the trading community as in addition to the ATP service, I have shared some of the real time MRM type plays online with some very top notch traders.

In essence, my work revolves around crowd psychology or what I call “Crowd Behavior”.  If there is one thing in the stock markets that never changes, it’s how crowds react to news, events, and also how they over react more importantly.  My MRM system helps to define where the crowd may be over reacting on the upside and also obviously the downside of a move in a security.  Knowing roughly where that upside and downside exhaustion point may be, can obviously be a huge tool in a traders tool box.

Let’s be honest, the Holy Grail of investing and or position trading would be to buy low and sell high as often as possible with as few mistakes as possible right?  The ATP MRM crowd based timing method is what that aims to do, a lofty goal but one we feel we are achieving on a regular basis.  The major problem most investors have is selling out of a position at the extreme areas of “Pain”, where your emotions take over and you cant take the paper loss any longer and you sell.  The other issue is chasing stocks higher because the adrenaline and excitement of owning a stock that is rushing higher is too hard to pass up.

Both of those investor psychology based decisions are made in panic buy and panic sell modes.  That leads to a recipe for disaster for a trading account over time.  Instead, what we want to do is the opposite right? We want to calmly buy shares in a stock that has become oversold due to emotional responses from the crowd, and sell into a huge rally where the crowd has become overly exuberant.  What if you could do that on a regular basis all the time with cool and calm nerves of steel?

Our MRM trading system at ATP allows us as best as we can to cooly and calmly enter into oversold stocks right near the apex of the lows, and then quietly exit into the rush as the stock reverses back to the upside.

Recent examples include the ETF NUGT.  This is a 300% leveraged ETF to the Gold Stock Index.  Now we all know the Gold Stocks have been under severe pressure of late as the GDX ETF has cratered from its highs over the last many months.  My MRM system though kept us out of the gold stocks, until very recently when we saw the idea entry point for a swing.  Based on the GDX falling into the 49 and below level, my MRM targets said we were at an extreme emotional bottom using my 1 day, 3 day, and weekly crowd indicators.  We therefore entered calmly into NUGT at 15.61, and within 48 hours we saw that ETF rally to 17.81!  We sold at 16.80 and 17.10 for 1/2 and 1/2 tranches to pocket 7-10% gains inside of 2 days.

The move from 15.61 to 17.81 was a 14% move inside of 48 hours!!  We also knew to sell into that rally because just a few short days later the NUGT had fallen all the way back to 15.30 per share.  My MRM method then said 15.31 was another entry buy, and 24 hours later NUGT was up another 7%!  So in the span of 6 trading days, MRM gave out an 8.5% blended return, and then followed it up with another 7% return.  Thats 15.5% of return with low downside risk in 6 trading days on just one ETF position!

We usually apply this type of work to MRM Positions that we actually intend to position ourselves in weeks not days.  However, if we do get extreme moves in a short period of time, we always look to trim back some of those profits in the position.  The samples above are what I call “Active Trades” at my ATP service, these are intended to days not weeks in holding period.  Keep in mind alot of our work is in an Active MRM portfolio where again, we are holding swing positions for weeks and not days, so it does not require as much daily work by our partners.

Some additional recent samples include CVV which we entered twice for profits inside of a few months.  We banked 13-16% gains on one swing, waited weeks and entered again.  The stock actually dropped below our MRM entry and we held on knowing that it was likely bottoming out amidst panic emotional selling at 10.66 per share.  A few weeks later our patience paid off as the stock rose to 13.80 per share.  Most traders would have taken the loss below $11 per share, and missed the reversal back up for 25% or more.  When you take a loss that way, you must then replace that position with another trade that gains 25% or more in this case.  MRM helps to avoid panic selling, and often to take advantage of panic drops in a stock to buy more.

A Stunning Silver Forecast Comes True, What Next?

From guest analyst David A. Banister at The Market Trend Forecast.com.....

In latter August I penned a forecast for my subscribers to TMTF on Silver, and below is a brief excerpt from August 31st:

I believe Silver is about to stage a pretty large advance based loosely on the Elliott Wave pattern I see unfolding after a 9 odd month consolidation. (Obviously, there are also fundamental fiat currency/debt events worldwide that give it the underlying bull chart pattern). Since the average person can’t run out and buy an ounce of Gold for $1,240 tomorrow, as the unfolding of the fiat crises continues to enter the public psyche, you will see a strong populace movement into buying silver, silver coins, etc. To wit, many silver stocks are moving up strongly of late, signally an imminent breakout of this precious and industrial metal.

The triangle pattern has taken nearly 9 months so far, and a move over $19.50 could start a multi-month run targeting $26-$29 per ounce for starters before a broad pullback.

I bring this up now, some 11 weeks later because Silver did in fact rally up from around $19 per ounce to $29 per ounce, and this was forecast well in advance using my crowd behavioral methodology and pattern recognition. The explosion in price I predicted happened much faster than even I expected, but does show the power of the crowds as they take hold of a new trend or a perceived trend and run with it. Part of the theory to be long silver also had to do with it being “poor man’s Gold”, which I indicated in my forecast. This is also crowd psychology in it’s finest form. People perceive Gold to be “too expensive”, but they can buy silver for only $29 an ounce. To wit, most investors do not really understand the difference between a stock that has 2 billion shares outstanding and one that has 20 million shares outstanding, they only care about price. They often think if a stock is $2 it’s “cheaper” than the stock at $100, little do they realize that a $2 stock that goes to $1 is a 50% loss, but they perceive that as a small risk due to the price. With Silver, you have the mom and pops running out and buying it because it’s “cheaper” than Gold.

Now that Silver has run to $29, my target, and then dropped back, what should expect next? Well, we are in that “broad pullback” I mentioned back in late August that would occur once $29 was hit. Technically speaking and looking at typical crowd behavior, I am expecting consolidation to continue for awhile under $29 per ounce. I call this recent pattern an A B C rally, and once the C wave ends at $29 in this case, forecasting the next move is extremely difficult and can be exasperating. The C wave ran from $19 to $29, and at the tops of those moves everyone is bullish and breathless. Figuring out how the crowd behaves after those patterns is similar to pulling a rabbit out of a hat. With that said, I would expect a 38-50% retracement of the $10 move to about $24 an ounce worst case, and then we should re-attack the $29 highs and likely move into the $32-$34 per ounce range within the next 60 days or so. Silver will continue to out-perform Gold for the foreseeable future as well if I’m right. It appears by my chart below that we already had our initial corrective low, and now we will consolidate and break out.

UNG, USO Trading Alerts Newsletter From The Gold and Oil Guy

UNG Natural Gas Trading Fund – Daily Chart
Nat gas looks to be finding support at the $11.50 level. This could provide a great short term trade for those active traders looking to grab a quick 5-10% gain if the price starts to rally intraday. Overall natural gas has been trading down and sideways.

USO Crude Oil Trading Fund - Weekly Chart

Crude oil has a very nice looking chart. The bullish pennant is pointing to a much higher price. Currently the price is stuck under the June resistance level but appears to be holding up nicely. Any week now I expect to see a sharp rally or a sharp sell off. Let’s continue to watch the price unfold.

Technical Traders Conclusion:

The analysis above allows you to see that crude oil is trading in a bullish pennant. I am watching the daily charts very closely for a buy signal. Waiting for my low risk buy signal is important because it confirms momentum and bullish price action before we put our money to work. This commodity could easily roll over and sell down quickly which is why I always follow my trading strategy to help avoid getting caught on the wrong side of the trade.

Natural gas is currently over sold in my opinion and ready for a bounce. If the price starts to move higher tomorrow (above Wednesdays high) then you could go long for a 1-5 day trade. There is a good chance it will provide 5-10% return, but be sure to take profits quickly as it is just a bounce (dead cat bounce). If the price drops below Wednesdays low then I would not be holding it any longer.
