Natural Gas: Fundamentally Bearish but Expecting a Seasonal Rally

From guest analyst Papa Roach.....

Here we are, starting October on a good note weather-wise (at least in Houston). You couldn’t ask for a string of beautiful days like we have had. Last month’s price action indeed avoided the seasonal rally that has come to be expected like clockwork. The story has remained a bearish supply side, HBP drilling tale in shale (Hold By Production, a general lease clause).

The Atlantic tropical season is on its downhill slide, and we in fact did see a fairly active season with 14 named systems as of this writing, 7 of which were hurricanes and 5 of those majors. However, the offshore production area was unfazed this year with most activity staying away from the central gulf coast. The precautionary shut-in volumes were negligible. The big story of this summer has been extreme temperatures.

The summer of 2010 will go down in the record books as one of the hottest on record. The graph below depicts the meteorological summer (June-August) and compares quite bullishly to last summer.

The temperature regime created a spot market premium the entire summer that rivaled what you would expect to see in high winter heating demand as gas-fired power generation was humming along to meet the high CDD loads (Cooling Degree Day). These temperatures created a level of demand that masked the high level of US supplies and likely saved a few smaller E&P companies from very tough times.

However, the market’s ability to sustain prices that were high enough to keep a healthy drilling pace will likely be the unraveling for some as prices did not do their job of curtailing supply. Most drilling in shale is indeed for HBP purposes; however, there was still a moderate pace of traditional vertical wells that kept the supply side moving higher throughout the period.

Commodity Corner: Crude Oil, Gasoline End the Week Higher

French labor troubles helped November crude oil to settle higher Friday. Crude oil for November delivery settled at $82.66 a barrel, a 99 cent gain from Thursday, as traders considered the increasing fallout from an ongoing strike at the Fos-Lavera oil and gas terminal near Marseille. The third-largest oil port in the world, Fos-Lavera is the key entry point for crude oil destined for half of France's refineries as well as other European refineries. For nearly two weeks, striking workers have prevented oil tankers from entering the port. With refinery utilization already low in a number of European refineries, a prolonged strike at Fos-Lavera could lead to refinery shutdowns.

The Fos-Lavera matter, coupled with a strong euro compared to the dollar, proved to have a greater influence on Friday's oil futures price than unimpressive September jobless figures from the U.S. Labor Department. The federal agency reported Friday that nonfarm payroll employment fell by 95,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate remained at 9.6 percent during that period. Oil traded from $80.30 to $83.13, and it ended the week 1.5 percent higher.

Natural gas futures, which plunged by more than six percent Thursday, regained some momentum Friday. November natural gas settled three cents higher to end the day at $3.65 per thousand cubic feet. The front month gas price, which has declined with recent mild weather forecasts, fluctuated between $3.58 and 3.68 Friday. Compared to Monday's $3.73 settlement price, gas is down 2.1 percent for the week. The price of a gallon of gasoline rose by three cents Friday, settling at $2.15. The intraday range for gasoline was $2.09 to $2.16, and the commodity ended the week up 2.9 percent.

Phil Flynn: Give Me That Old Time Inflation

..... it's good enough for me. The Federal Reserve has changed sides! Can you believe that the Federal Reserve is rooting for inflation! I mean that is like Superman rooting for the communists. The Feds' mission has always been to fight inflation, not create it. Yet that is exactly what they are doing. Of course the truth is, regular readers of my reports have known for years that the Fed joined the inflationary dark side of the force.

The Fed wants commodity prices higher to inspire economic activity as business start to fear that use it or lose it in relation to the spending power of their devalued dollars. The Fed wants inflation and they know how to create it and you cannot get in the Feds way. It is as I wrote the day after Quantitative Easing 1 March, 2009 when I said, "I fought the Fed and the Fed won. I fought the Fed and the Fed won.

Needed money so they printed some, I fought the Fed and the Fed won." I went on to say, “ do not underestimate the way this Fed can change the marketplace. The Fed's timing of this move to quantitative easing still has the market coming to grips with the shorter and longer term effects on the economy and the markets. The one thing that is for sure is that the rules of the game have changed.

And when it comes to a knife fight and Fed power, there are no rules. Someone say one, two, three, gold! In a blink of an eye the Fed, with its unlimited power to print money, can change the dollar value of a commodity or its long term trend in an instant. By creating inflation and money out of thin air they can.......Read the entire article.

Commodity Corner: Crude Oil Gets Boost from Gasoline Data

November crude oil futures benefited Wednesday from an unexpected decline in U.S. gasoline inventories last week, along with a weaker dollar. Oil settled at $83.23 a barrel, a 41 cent improvement from Tuesday, after the U.S. Department of Energy announced that total gasoline stocks declined to 219.9 million barrels as of October 1.

The latest figure represents a 1.2% decline from the previous week. The euro, meanwhile, gained 0.723% against the dollar to an exchange rate of US$1.3936 Wednesday. Since September 8, the euro has rallied nearly 9% against the greenback. A weaker dollar relative to the euro typically places upward pressure on oil prices.

The crude oil futures price peaked at $84.09 and bottomed out at $82.29. Given the Energy Department's report on the refined product, gasoline for November delivery also ended the day higher Wednesday. Gasoline rose three cents to settle at $2.16 a gallon after trading from $2.11 to $2.165. Colder temperatures are not expected to set in until later in the season, a prediction that natural gas traders have been quite aware of lately as prices have been low in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, gas futures settled at $3.865 per thousand cubic feet Wednesday, a 3.3% increase from the previous day. The bullish sentiment for gas stems from speculation that the Energy Information Administration would announce a decline in natural gas inventories in a weekly report Thursday. The front-month price for natural gas fluctuated from $3.75 to $3.88.

Stock Market and Commodities Commentary For Wednesday Evening Oct. 6th

The U.S. stock indexes closed mixed today. A weak ADP U.S. jobs report did give the stock market bulls pause today. However, the index bulls still have the overall near term technical advantage. Traders are gearing up for Friday's U.S. employment report. Look for more subdued trading in the stock indexes until then, but then look for an active trading day on Friday, in the wake of the jobs data.

Crude oil closed up $0.41 at $83.23 a barrel today. Prices closed near mid-range today and hit a fresh nearly five month high. Bulls have the solid near term technical advantage in crude. Prices are in an accelerating six week old uptrend on the daily bar chart. The next near-term upside price objective for the bulls is producing a close above solid technical resistance at $86.00 a barrel.

Natural gas closed up 11.8 cents at $3.861 today. Prices closed nearer the session high today and saw more short covering in a bear market. The bears still have the solid overall near term technical advantage. The next upside price objective for the bulls is closing prices above solid technical resistance at $4.20.

Gold futures closed up $5.90 at $1,346.20 today. Prices today closed near mid-range and hit another fresh contract and all time record high. A weaker U.S. dollar index and strong investor demand continue to boost the gold market bulls. While gold bulls still have the solid overall near term technical advantage and there are still no significant early technical clues that a market top is close at hand, the market is now a bit over extended on a near term basis and due for a corrective pullback soon.

The U.S. dollar index closed down 33 points at 77.63 today. Prices closed nearer the session low again today and hit another fresh 8 1/2 month low. Bears have the solid overall near term technical advantage. There are still no early clues to suggest a market bottom is close at hand.

Crude Oil Weekly Technical Outlook For Saturday Oct. 2nd

Crude oil's rise from 72.75 accelerated to as high as 81.75 last week and the development suggests that whole rise from 70.76 is not corrective in nature. In other words, rise from 70.76 is resuming whole rebound from 64.23 and should extend beyond 82.97 resistance. Initial bias is on the upside this week and further rise should be seen to 161.8% projection of 70.76 to 78.04 from 72.75 at 84.53. On the downside, below 79.70 will turn intraday bias neutral and bring consolidations. But downside should be contained by 4 hours 55 EMA (now at 77.32) and bring another rise.

In the bigger picture, the stronger than expected rally from 70.76 dampened the immediate bearish view and suggests that rise from 64.23 is still in progress. Nevertheless, we're still favoring the case that medium term rally from 33.2 is already completed at 87.15. Hence, strong resistance should be seen as crude oil enters into resistance zone of 82.97/87.15 and bring reversal. We're still expecting another fall to 60 psychological level (50% retracement of 33.2 to 87.15 at 60.18).

In the long term picture, current development suggests that rebound from 33.2 is finished at 87.15, inside 76.77/90.24 fibo resistance zone as expected. Our view is that fall from 87.15 would develop into the third falling leg of the whole correction from 147.27 and hence, we'd anticipate an eventual break of 33.2 low in the long term as such correction extends.

A Perfect Weekend for “The 52-week New Highs on Friday Rule”

From guest blogger Adam Hewison .....

We published this trading rule on our blog almost 8 months ago, February 10 to be exact. You can look it up if you wish. With gold making all time highs on Friday, it seems like the perfect candidate for this rule. Just remember, there are no guarantees in trading and you want gold to close at or near its highs for the day.

I learned this rule over 3 decades ago in the markets from a low key trader named Bill. Using his special trading technique, Bill made millions and millions of dollars from his office. The best part is that this technique is still working more than 30 years after it was taught to me and why I insist on sharing it with as many traders as possible.

Bill didn’t even have a name for this killer trading technique and so I named it, “The 52-week new highs on Friday rule”.

This technique has been working with amazing regularity. In the video, I show you that when a market is closing at a 52 week high on a Friday, you should go long. In case you missed it, and all of the rules, you can watch here.

When I hear people say that things have changed in the market and that they are completely different from what they used to be, I have to disagree. I think this is a good example why.
As always, our videos are free to watch and there are no registration requirements. Have you traded using the “52 week Friday rule”? If so, let us know how it went, but regardless of whether you have or not, leave your comments below.

Just click here to learn this trading secret and please take a minute to leave a comment and let us know what you think.

P.S. Here are the 52 WEEK RULES
Here are the three rules you need to trade “The 52-week new highs on Friday rule”
These are the exact rules that Bill used to make millions
Rule number 1: On a new 52-week high, when the market closes at or close to its high on a Friday, buy long and go home long for the weekend.
Rule number 2: Exit the long position on the opening the following Tuesday.
Rule number 3: If the market opens lower on Monday, exit the position immediately.
There you have it. These are the only three rules you need to trade with “The 52-week new highs on a Friday rule” successfully.
“The 52 week new highs on a Friday rule” works extremely well in futures and in the Forex markets. This rule can be reversed for “The 52 week new lows on a Friday rule” if you are so inclined to trade the short side of the market. The same rules apply.

Stock Market and Commodities Commentary For Wednesday Evening Sept. 29th

The U.S. stock indexes closed mixed today. The indexes earlier this week hit fresh multi month highs. Bulls still have upside near term technical momentum. We are half way through the historically bearish period from September to October, and the stock indexes have so far performed very well. It is my bias that if this autumn were to see serious market turbulence, it would likely have occurred during September. I would not be surprised to see the stock indexes rally during October and then trade sideways and choppy into the end of the year.

Crude oil closed up $1.53 at $77.71 a barrel today. Prices closed nearer the session high today following a bullish weekly U.S. stocks report. Bulls have gained the near term technical advantage in crude. The next near term upside price objective for the bulls is producing a close above solid technical resistance at the September high of $78.86 a barrel.

Natural gas closed up 1.4 cents at $3.965 today. Prices closed near the session high today in quiet trading and saw more tepid short covering in a bear market. The bears still have the solid overall near term technical advantage. The next upside price objective for the bulls is closing prices above solid technical resistance at the September high of $4.298.

Gold futures closed up $3.20 at $1,311.60 today. Prices today closed near mid range today and scored another fresh record high. A weaker U.S. dollar and more safe haven buying interest boosted gold again today. Gold bulls have the solid overall near term technical advantage. There are still no early technical clues to suggest a market top is close at hand in the gold market. Prices are in a two month old uptrend on the daily bar chart.

The U.S. dollar index closed down 23 points at 78.97 today. Prices closed near mid range today and hit another fresh eight month low. Bears have the solid overall near term technical advantage. There are no early clues to suggest a market bottom is close at hand. Bulls' next upside price objective is to close prices above solid technical resistance at 81.00.

Phil Flynn: Take No Quarter, Give No Quarter

Or at the very least beware of the end of the US fourth quarter. The quarter was a dream especially the month of September for stock market and precious metal bulls. Yet it seems as the quarter is coming to an end the markets with the most strength are running out of steam as funds and traders look to book profits as the markets failed to take out key resistance. For gold and all the talk about $1300.00 per once, the market never officially made it there and at the end of the quarter it seems that close is good enough. So unless we get some bearish news on the dollar it seems that 1300 an ounce won’t be hit at least until the next quarter. The stock market is rounding out a profit taking top as traders look to book profits from the best September since 1939.

Yes this is a September to remember but also remember that this is a profit taking business and it appears that unless the data gets us real excited the correction should start. The market in gold and stocks has been helped by the Fed. Ben Bernanke and his band of money printing merry men have engineered this latest gold and stock market rally. Now if only they can get it to trickle down to the oil market. Oil prices, while higher, are a bit less inclined to get excited about the recent stock market strength. With supply near record high and high stock prices not necessarily being reflected in real oil demand oil traders are less.....Read the entire article.

Phil Flynn: The Oil Market Finally Decided To Join The Commodity Rally

The oil market finally decided to join the commodity rally after spending most of the week on the sideline. The power of the Fed cannot be ignored forever as the threat of stimulus is always lurking around the corner. With most other commodities putting in strong performances, oil and the products followed but only reluctantly. Some say the durable goods number was the catalyst or strong data from Germany yet more than anything was the rising tide of all commodities that floated the oil market boat. Natural gas is collapsing as the weight of oversupply begins to take its toll.

With Gulf storms seemingly not a threat to supply and the fact that a falling dollar really does not matter that much to this market, gas could start to fall even harder. The trade likes to play crude off of the gas market and that should lead to further downside pressure. Do you remember when OPEC seemed to matter? Dow Jones reports that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is unlikely to change production quotas at its next meeting in Vienna, scheduled for Oct. 14, as current oil prices are "comfortable," Kuwait's Oil Minister said Monday. Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Sabah added that he isn't concerned about global crude oil demand but is worried about.....Read the entire article.

Crude to Remain Range Bound Under OPEC's Manipulation

The dovish September FOMC statement heightened speculations that the Fed will announce additional monetary easing measures later this year. Provision of extra liquidity to the market is negative for USD. The dollar index dropped below 80 for the first time since March 2010. Weakness in USD drove commodities higher. WTI crude oil rallied, after a week of selloff in the prior week due to earlier than expected resumption of operation in the 6A pipeline, as a lower dollar increased it appeal despite unexpected rise in crude inventory. Precious metals strengthened with gold reaching rising above 1300 for the first time on record while silver outperforming its counterparts. Base metals were generally higher as robust demand from China boosted confidence in the complex's outlook.

Crude oil rallied on Friday as driven by strength in Wall Street. WTI crude oil for November delivery jumped to 76.68, the highest level in more than a week, before settling at 76.49, up +3.84% during the week. Meanwhile, corresponding contract for Brent crude gained +0.84% during the week. WTI-Brent spread widened to 4.9, a level not seen since mid-May, on Wednesday, as crude inventory surprisingly increased despite shutdown of the Enbridge pipeline, before narrowing to 2.4 on Friday.

When sovereign crisis in the Eurozone reached its peak in May/June, rally in the dollar and selloff in growth assets had sent crude oil price to as low as 64.24. As the concerns gradually abated and risk appetite increased slowly, oil buyers became active again and sent prices above 80 in August. Nevertheless, crude oil price has remained within a range of 70 and 80 for most of the time. In fact, we expect the 'range-bound' situation will continue for the rest of the year as we see price below 70 would attract buying, e.g. from the Chinese government as strategic reserves, and trigger 'intervention' by the OPEC while price above 80 is unsustainable giving growing non-OPEC production and ample OPEC spare capacity.

China's strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) plan aims at completing the 3 phases of oil reserve base construction in 15 year (around 2020). While the sky-high oil price in 2008 had discouraged stockpiling, China's oil imports rebounded sharply in March 2009 when oil price stabilized after a sharp selloff. In 2010, China has been importing a large amount of oil and a record high being set in June 2010 (at 22.27M metric tons). We believe part of the oil imports went to the country's national oil reserves and the commercial oil reserves of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the Sinopec Group. Now that the country's is in the middle of the 15-year plan and, given the opportunistic nature of the SPR buying, it's likely for the country to accelerate the pace of stockpiling when global oil price fall below 70,  the lower boundary of the trading range.

OPEC is in control of the world's 40% oil supply and has proven capability of 'adjusting' oil prices using its output. The cartel appears satisfied with recent price levels and some oil ministers expressed they preferred oil to trade at around 70-80. Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah said that 75 is a level he wants. Therefore, it's reasonable to believe the cartel will do something, i.e. cut production, to defend the floor.

Yet OPEC's supply is a 2-edged sword. While it may cut production so that oil price will not fall to a level that hurts oil investment and national revenues, its abundant spare capacity is limiting the upside of oil price.

According to the September Short-Term Energy Report by the US Energy Department, OPEC's crude oil production will increase +0.3M bpd and 0.5M bpd 2010 and 2011, respectively, with non-crude petroleum liquids expected to increase by 0.6M bpd 2010 and 0.7M bpd in 2011. Spare capacity in the cartel should remain near 5M bpd compared with 4.3M bpd in 2009 and 1.5M bpd in 2008.

New Video: Let The Carnival Begin!

Here is a market that we like a lot more than the US market. We really like the way its acting and it looks set to take out the highs that were seen in December of 2009. If that is the case, then we could see this market make all time highs pretty quickly. You definitely want to have
this one on your radar screen.

In this new short video, I show you what I'm looking at and how we showcased this market last week when we did our last webinar. This webinar is set to be rebroadcast on Friday, September 24th at 5pm EST/9pm GMT.

This market is still looking good and looking strong. Pay very close to it this Friday because if it closes well, it should bode well for the following week.

Stock Market and Commodities Summary For Wednesday Evening

The S&P 500 index closed lower due to profit taking on Thursday as it consolidated some of the rally off August's low. The low range close sets the stage for a steady to lower opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are overbought and are turning bearish hinting that a short term top might be in or is near. Closes below the 20 day moving average crossing at 1097.04 are needed to confirm that a short term top has been posted. If December extends the aforementioned rally, the 75% retracement level of the April-July decline crossing at 1152.70 is the next upside target. First resistance is Tuesday's high crossing at 1143.70. Second resistance is the 75% retracement level of the April-July decline crossing at 1152.70. First support is today's low crossing at 1117.90. Second support is the 20 day moving average crossing at 1097.04.

Crude oil closed higher on Thursday as it consolidates some of the decline off last week's high. The high range close sets the stage for a steady to higher opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI remain bearish signaling that sideways to lower prices are possible near term. If November extends the decline off last week's high, August's low crossing at 71.49 is the next downside target. Closes above last week's high crossing at 78.86 are needed to renew the rally off August's low. First resistance is the 10 day moving average crossing at 76.19. Second resistance is last Monday's high crossing at 78.86. First support today's low crossing at 73.58. Second support is August's low crossing at 71.49.

Natural gas closed higher on Thursday however, profit taking tempered early gains and the low range close sets the stage for a steady to lower opening on Friday. However, stochastics and the RSI are turning neutral to bullish signaling that sideways to higher prices are possible near term. If October extends last week's rally, the 38% retracement level of the June-August decline crossing at 4.321 is the next upside target. Closes below Monday's low crossing at 3.806 would temper the near term friendly outlook. First resistance is last Friday's high crossing at 4.060. Second resistance is the 38% retracement level of the June-August decline crossing at 4.321. First support is Monday's low crossing at 3.806. Second support is August's low crossing at 3.697.

Gold closed higher on Thursday as it extends the rally off July's low. Stochastics and the RSI are overbought but remain neutral to bullish signaling that sideways to higher prices is possible near term. Upside targets will now be hard to project as it extends this year's rally. Closes below the 20 day moving average crossing at 1260.06 would confirm that a short term top has been posted. First resistance is Wednesday's high crossing at 1298.00. First support is the 10 day moving average crossing at 1272.60. Second support is the 20 day moving average crossing at 1260.06.

The U.S. Dollar posted an inside day with a higher close on Thursday as it consolidates some of the decline off August's high. The mid-range close sets the stage for a steady opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are oversold but remain neutral to bearish signaling that sideways to lower prices are possible near term. If December extends the decline off August's high, the 87% retracement level of this year's rally crossing at 78.66 is the next downside target. Closes above the 20 day moving average crossing at 82.20 would confirm that a short term low has been posted. First resistance is the 10 day moving average crossing at 81.39. Second resistance is the 20 day moving average crossing at 82.20. First support is Wednesday's low crossing at 79.77. Second support is the 87% retracement level of this year's rally crossing at 78.66.
