The Last Time We Saw This, Investors Doubled Their Money in Six Months

By Justin Spittler

Gold couldn’t catch a bid in December 2015. It was down more than 30%, and trading at the lowest price in nearly six years. Gold stocks, which are leveraged to the price of gold, were doing even worse. The average gold stock was 80% off its highs. Most investors wanted nothing to do with gold. But not Doug Casey. Doug knew gold would rebound. It was only a matter of time. He even told Kitco, one of the world’s biggest gold and silver retailers, on December 18, 2015, that he was buying gold hand over fist:
My opinion is if it’s not the bottom, it’s close enough to the bottom. So, I have to be an aggressive buyer of both gold and silver at this point.
Doug’s timing was nearly perfect.…
The day before, gold bottomed. It went on to gain 30% over the next six months. The average gold stock more than doubled in value over the same period.

I’m telling this story because an opportunity just like this is shaping up before our eyes. Only this time, it’s in the energy market.

Energy stocks have been beaten to a pulp.…
You can see what I mean below. It shows how the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) has done since the start of the year. This fund invests in 36 major U.S. energy companies, including Exxon Mobil and Chevron. You can see that XLE is down 13% this year. That makes energy stocks the worst-performing sector in the S&P 500.

Energy stocks are now off to “one of the worst beginnings to the year ever,” according to Morgan Stanley. As if that weren’t enough to scare away most investors, look at the ugly chart below. It compares the performance of XLE with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), which tracks the S&P 500. When the line is rising, energy stocks are doing better than the broad market. When it’s falling, energy stocks are underperforming the S&P 500.

Energy stocks have been lagging the broad market for nearly a decade.…
As a result, energy stocks now make up just 5.9% of the S&P 500. That’s half of what the sector’s weighting was in 2011. Not only that, the 36 energy stocks that make up XLE are now worth less than the combined value of Apple and Alphabet, the parent company of Google.

Situations like this don’t last forever.…
Eventually, the pendulum swings the other way. The trick is knowing when that will happen. That’s obviously easier said than done. Plus, you have to understand that markets rarely change direction on a dime. Instead, they usually go through a bottoming process that can take weeks or longer. And it looks like energy stocks may have begun that process.

Energy stocks took off last week.…
XLE jumped 2.5% on Friday. That was the biggest one-day jump in energy stocks since last November. This week, XLE is up another 1.4%. Now, it would be easy to dismiss this as “noise.” But if energy stocks keep rallying, XLE could “break out.” The chart below shows the performance of XLE over the last 12 months. You can see that it’s been in a downtrend since late 2016.

You can see that XLE hasn’t broken out of its downtrend yet. But it could do that sooner than most investors think.

Energy companies are starting to make money again.…
Revenues for energy companies in the S&P 500 surged 34% during the first quarter of 2017. That was more than quadruple the S&P 500’s 7.6% jump in revenues. Wall Street now expects U.S energy companies to post an 18% rise in revenues when the second quarter is all said and done. Not only that, analysts expect the sector to report a more than 400% spike in second-quarter profits. For perspective, second quarter profits for the rest of the S&P 500 are expected to rise just 3.7%.

Once “the market” figures this out, watch out.…
Energy stocks are going to skyrocket just like gold stocks did in early 2016. Keep in mind, the bottoming process could take weeks or even months. So, wait for energy stocks to “carve a bottom” before diving in. That’s when stocks stop falling, trade in a tight range for a period of time, and then start heading higher. Stocks that carve a bottom often keep soaring. Just look at what GDX did after it carved a bottom early last year.

By waiting for energy stocks to carve a bottom, you’ll greatly limit your downside…without giving up a chance at big returns. I'll let you know when the time is right to invest in the energy sector. In the meantime, keep an eye on XLE and other energy funds like the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP). Once they carve out bottoms, it will be a good time to buy.

If You Own These Stocks, Your Dividend Is in Danger

By Justin Spittler

Mining companies are having another horrible week. As Dispatch readers know, commodities are in a deep bear market. Over the past year, the Bloomberg Commodity Index, which tracks 22 different commodities, has fallen to its lowest level since May 1999. Many individual commodities have lost 30% or more in the last year. Since December 2014, coffee has dropped 30%, palladium has dropped 34%, and platinum has dropped 31%. Crashing commodity prices have forced many mining companies to drastically cut spending.

Yesterday, mining giant Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) suspended its dividend. Freeport is the seventh largest mining company and the second largest copper miner in the world. The suspension of Freeport’s dividend is a major event. Until recently, Freeport was one of the industry’s most generous dividend payers. It paid $4.7 billion in dividends between 2012 and 2014. Its stock yielded about 3.8% in 2014.

Click here to get a free trend analysis for Freeport-McMoran

Management hopes to save $240 million a year by not paying a dividend. Freeport will also reduce its copper production by 29%, and cut capital spending by $1 billion over the next two years.
Freeport’s stock jumped 3.7% yesterday. It’s still down 71% this year.

The price of copper, Freeport’s main source of revenue, has plunged.…
Copper has dropped 27% this year to a six year low. Crashing energy prices have also slammed Freeport. In 2013, Freeport loaded up on debt to acquire two oil and gas companies. Its timing was awful. At the time, the North American energy industry was booming. But since last June, the energy sector has entered one of its worst bear markets on record. The price of oil has plunged 66% to its lowest level since 2009. The price of natural gas has dropped 55%. Freeport’s sales have now declined five quarters in a row. The company lost $3.8 billion last quarter, after making a $552 million profit a year ago.

Investors hate dividend cuts.…
A dividend cut often signals that a company is in big trouble. Typically, a company will only cut its dividend when it runs out of other options. Companies will often shelve new projects, lay off workers, and slash executive compensation before touching their dividends.

Freeport is only one of several major commodity giants to cut its dividend this year...
Anglo American (AAL.L), the world’s fifth largest mining company, suspended its dividend on Tuesday. The company will not pay a dividend again until at least 2017.

Kinder Morgan (KMI), North America’s largest energy pipeline company, also cut its dividend on Tuesday. The company’s fourth quarter dividend will be 75% less than it planned.
The list goes on….Vale (VALE), the world’s largest miner.…Glencore (GLEN.L), the world’s third largest miner….and....

Peabody Energy (BTU), the world’s largest publicly traded coal company, all cut their dividends this year.
Widespread dividend cuts suggest that major miners are in “survival mode.” To us, this is a key sign that commodities may be near a bottom. While prices of certain commodities could easily go lower or stay low, commodities as a group may be in a bottoming process.

Oil dropped to a new six year low yesterday.…
As we mentioned, the price of oil has now dropped 66% since June 2014. This is oil’s second-worst drop since 1985. The only bigger drop happened during the financial crisis when oil plummeted 77%.
Low oil prices are crushing the “supermajors,” four of the world’s biggest oil companies. Third quarter sales for BP (BP) fell 41%, year over year. Sales for Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) both fell 37%. And sales for Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) fell 36%.

All four companies have announced drastic spending cuts to cope with falling revenues. BP cut spending on capital projects by about $6 billion this year. Exxon cut spending on capital projects by 22% in the third quarter. Chevron announced 7,000 layoffs after reporting poor third quarter results. And Shell abandoned a $7 billion oil project in the Arctic. Together, these companies have cut spending by more than $30 billion in just the last few months.

Even with huge spending cuts, the supermajors are still bleeding cash….
In October, The Wall Street Journal reported:
Spending on new projects, share buybacks and dividends at four of the biggest oil companies known as the supermajors – Royal Dutch Shell PLC, BP PLC, Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. – outstripped cash flow by more than a combined $20 billion in the first half of 2015, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.

However, the supermajors have NOT cut dividends yet.…
For years, supermajor dividends have been one of the safest income streams on the planet. Shell hasn’t cut its dividend since the end of World War II. Exxon has increased or maintained its dividend for 33 consecutive quarters. Chevron has done the same for 27 consecutive quarters. Many investors consider these dividends untouchable. They’re often a foundational part of their holdings, like grandma’s ring or the family farm. However, if oil keeps plummeting, these companies might have to cut their dividends.

Dividend yields for the supermajors are soaring.…
Since January, Shell’s dividend yield has jumped from 5.1% to 8.1%. It’s nearing a historic high. BP’s dividend yield has jumped from 6.5% to 8.4% over the same period. Exxon’s has jumped from 3.0% to 3.9%. And Chevron’s has jumped from 3.8% to 5.0%. These yields are not going up because the companies are increasing payouts. They’re going up because these companies’ stock prices are falling.

The world’s biggest oil companies were not prepared for oil to drop below $40.…
Financial Times reported on Tuesday: Just weeks ago, BP and France’s Total each pledged to balance their books at $60 a barrel oil, saying they aimed to cover their dividends from “organic” cash flow by 2017.
Total (TOT) is another giant oil company that’s struggling. Total’s quarterly sales have dropped four quarters in a row. If oil continues to trade below $40, these companies might have no choice but to cut their dividends. In fact, their dividends might be at risk even if oil does rebound soon.

Even at $60, the three biggest European majors will need to take further cost cutting action to cover investor payouts…Total’s $6.8bn dividend would exceed its projected organic free cash flow by $800m two years from now. For BP, the cash shortfall is put at $500m. If these giant oil companies do cut their dividends, it could trigger huge selloffs. Many investors hold these companies specifically for their reliable dividends.

Chart of the Day

The bear market in oil may be far from over. Today’s chart compares the Bloomberg Commodity Index, or BCOM, to the price of oil. As we mentioned earlier, BCOM tracks 22 different commodities. Commodities and oil both peaked in 2011. BCOM entered a bear market almost immediately after. Oil, however, didn’t have a big drop until mid-2014.

In other words, commodities have been in a bear market for four years…but oil has been in a bear market for less than two years. That’s one reason why major commodity companies have cut dividends but the oil supermajors haven’t…yet. Until major oil companies begin to cut dividends, we wouldn’t bet on a bottom in oil.

Chevron Reports Second Quarter Earnings.....Misses by $0.21, Beats on Revenue

“We continue to advance our major capital projects. An important milestone was achieved in the second quarter with the loading of the first cargo of liquefied natural gas at the Angola LNG project, one of the largest energy projects on the African continent.” Watson continued,“ This marks an important step in the development of our LNG business. Offshore Oil Expansion Passes U.S. House as Obama Considers Veto

How To Position Yourself for a 10 Year Pattern Breakout

The Republican led U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation opening the California and Virginia coasts for offshore oil drilling, defying a presidential veto threat.

The measure, if approved by the Senate, would replace President Barack Obama’s 2012-2017 leasing plan, almost doubling total sales to 29 from 15 and speeding auctions off the north coast of Alaska.

“We can do better than the president’s proposed plan, and our nation deserves better,” said Representative Doc Hastings, a Washington Republican and bill sponsor. “By passing this bill, we are standing up for American energy and American jobs and moving our country forward.”

Republicans and the American Petroleum Institute, the largest trade group representing the energy industry, criticized Obama for limiting access to offshore resources after the record 2010 spill at a BP Plc (BP) well in the Gulf of Mexico.

The administration “strongly opposes” the measure and senior Obama advisers would recommend a veto, according to a July 23 statement of administration policy. The Senate, where Democrats have a majority, doesn’t plan to take up similar legislation.

The Interior Department has held two auctions for drilling leases since BP’s Macondo well blow out, killing 11 workers and spewing about 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

In an auction last month, Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) offered $406.6 million, or 24 percent of all winning bids, to drill in the central Gulf of Mexico, followed by Statoil ASA (STO) with $333.3 million, the Interior Department said June 20.

Chevron Corp., Exxon Mobil Corp., Apache Corp., LLOG Exploration Offshore LLC, Stone Energy Corp., Noble Energy Inc. and ConocoPhillips were among companies submitting winning bids, according to a list posted June 20 on the Interior Department website.

The bill is H.R. 6082.

Exxon Holds Its Ground

Nearly a year ago, Exxon Mobil made a multibillion dollar bet on its vision that natural gas will become a dominant fuel during the next few decades. Tuesday, Chevron made a similar, albeit smaller, wager on a domestic natural gas producer. As Chevron starts to sell its Atlas deal to shareholders, Exxon continues to have trouble convincing its investors it made the right move.

Still, Exxon isn't veering from its long-term strategy of bulking up on U.S. natural gas. In December, the oil company announced plans to buy XTO Energy Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas, making Exxon the largest gas producer in the U.S. This summer, it bought gas producer Ellora Energy Inc. of Boulder, Colo., for $695 million, and opened a terminal along the Gulf Coast to import natural gas from the Middle East.

All the while, the price of natural gas has been falling, and is off 21% since Exxon announced the $25 billion XTO deal. On Tuesday, natural gas futures contract for December settled up 12.2 cents at $4.210 a million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The commodity is trading at low prices after newly developed drilling techniques exploited tight shale gas rock formations during the past decade, creating a glut.

The XTO acquisition lifted Exxon's energy output by nearly 14%, but brought in only about $150 million in net earnings in the third quarter, the first in which Exxon reported financial data that included XTO. That is about 3% of what the company earned from the sale of oil and natural gas during that period......Read the entire article.

Crude Oil Weekly Technical Outlook

Crude oil had a rebound attempt last week but failed at 86.39, below near term high of 87.09, and reversed sharply. The close below near term rising trend line argues that rise from 69.50 is over after hitting 61.8% projection of 69.50 to 83.16 from 78.56 at 87.00. But we'll need more evidence to confirm. Hence, we'll stay neutral first. On the upside, above resistance will suggest that recent rally is still in progress for 90 psychological level before making a top. On the downside, however, firm break of 38.2% retracement of 69.50 to 87.09 at 80.37 will confirm that rise from 69.50 is over and will bring deeper fall to 61.8% retracement at 76.22 and below.

In the bigger picture, note again that medium term rise from 33.20 is viewed as a correction to the whole correction that started at 2008 at 147.27. Our preferred view is that rise from 33.2 is in form of a three wave structure (73.23, 65.05, ?) and should be near to completion. Strong resistance is expected around 90 psychological level, which coincide with 50% retracement of 147.27 to 33.2 at 90.24 and 61.8% projection of 33.2 to 73.23 from 65.05 at 89.79, and bring reversal. Hence, even though another rally cannot be ruled out, upside potential should be limited. On the downside, break of 69.50 support will break the series of higher low pattern from 33.2 and will be an important indication that the trend has reversed. In such case, we'll turn bearish on crude oil and expect the then down trend to target a new low below 33.2.

In the long term picture, there is no change in the view that fall from 147.27 is part of the correction to the five wave sequence from 98 low of 10.65. While the rebound from 33.2 is strong and might continue, there is no solid evidence that suggest fall 147.27 is completed and we're still preferring the case that rebound from 33.2 is merely a corrective rise only. Having said that, strong resistance should be seen between 76.77/90.24 fibo resistance zone and bring reversal for another low below 33.2 before completing the whole correction from 147.27.....Nymex Crude Oil Continuous Contract 4 Hours Chart.

Crude Oil Weekly Technical Outlook

Crude oil edged higher to 87.09 last week but failed to sustain above 61.8% projection of 69.50 to 83.16 from 78.56 at 86.92 and formed a short term top there. Consolidation from there is still in progress and deeper retreat cannot be ruled out. But downside should be contained by 61.8% retracement of 78.56 to 87.09 at 81.82 and bring rally resumption. Above 87.09 will target 90 psychological level next.

In the bigger picture, medium term rise from 33.2 is still in progress and could extend further higher. Nevertheless, there is no change in the view that it's the second wave of the whole correction that started in 2008 at 147.27. Hence, we'd continue to expect strong resistance near to 50% retracement of 147.27 to 33.2 at 90.24 to bring reversal. On the downside, below 78.56 support will be the first signal of topping and will turn focus back to 69.50 support for confirmation.

Chevron Rakes in $3.1Billion, Earnings Down 37%

Chevron Corporation reported earnings of $3.07 billion ($1.53 per share-diluted) for the fourth quarter 2009, compared with $4.90 billion ($2.44 per share-diluted) in the fourth quarter 2008. Earnings in the 2008 quarter included a gain of approximately $600 million on an upstream asset exchange transaction. Foreign currency effects reduced earnings in the 2009 quarter by $67 million, compared with a benefit to income of $478 million a year earlier.

Full year 2009 earnings were $10.48 billion ($5.24 per share-diluted), down 56 percent from $23.93 billion ($11.67 per share-diluted) in 2008.

Sales and other operating revenues in the fourth quarter 2009 were $48 billion, compared with $43 billion in the year ago quarter. For the full year 2009, sales and other operating revenues were $167 billion, versus $265 billion in 2008. The decrease in the twelve month period was primarily due to lower prices for crude oil, natural gas and refined products.

"Earnings decreased in 2009 as a result of lower crude oil and natural gas prices and a decline in refined product sales margins, driven by a weak global economy," said Chevron’s Chairman and CEO, John Watson. "In this challenging environment, Chevron's successes in operational reliability and cost management made valuable contributions to our bottom line. Our financial strength enabled continued investment in our excellent portfolio of capital and exploratory projects and an increase in the annual dividend on our common shares for the 22nd consecutive year.....Read the entire article.

Oldest Oil Fund in the U.S. Targets Solar Stocks as Crude Outlook Dims

Petroleum & Resources Corp., the oldest U.S. oil fund, plans to invest in solar and wind power production for the first time since its founding in 1929 as governments crack down on fuels linked to greenhouse gases. The $555 million closed end fund, whose biggest holdings are Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp., is analyzing wind power, biofuels, solar and hybrid car battery makers with an eye to making investments as soon as the second quarter of 2010, Chief Executive Officer Douglas Ober said.

Aside from an investment in an ethanol producer two years ago and a wind turbine manufacturer in the 1990s, the Baltimore based fund never before ventured into so called green energy, Ober said. That’s changing now because of legislative efforts to discourage use of oil based fuels and concern that global crude supplies are getting harder to find. “Climate legislation looks like it may become a reality in Washington, and that’s going to usher in significant changes for the oil companies,” Ober said yesterday in a telephone interview. “We realize there isn’t going to be oil forever, so we need to look for other types of stocks and find the right place to be”.....Read the entire article.

Chevron Squeezes New Oil from One of World's Oldest Fields

Chevron Corp. is employing new technologies in hopes of extending the life of one of the world's oldest and most prolific oil fields, a process that is being replicated elsewhere to help the energy industry squeeze more out of aging oil basins. The Kern River field has produced more than 2 billion barrels of oil in its 110 year history, but Chevron estimates it still holds another 1.5 billion barrels.

Chevron is using the Kern River field as a real world laboratory, testing enhanced recovery techniques and bringing in engineers from around the world to learn them. "The thing about being in this old oil field," said Chevron engineer Joe Fram, "you can try stuff." To get as many of those barrels as possible out of the ground and do so cheaply enough to turn a profit Chevron is deploying high tech temperature sensors to monitor its production, using three dimensional computer models to plan its wells and filtering waste water from the fields through walnut shells so it can be re-used .....read the entire article.
